Sergei Zakharchenko served with an army unit in the City of Odessa (Ukraine) during the first year after his graduation (1992-1993). He then retired from military service (as lieutenant).
In the following years he was employed by Kommersant of the South regional newspaper, and then by Black Sea Shipping Company (BLASCO). He came out as co-founder of a foreign languages business in 1994. He then worked with a USAID-sponsored agency (Planning and Development Collaborative International, or PADCO, with head office in Washington, D.C.) on a number of projects in the Ukraine, mostly in the area of residential urban development. In 1997-2000 he worked with L'Oreal (Ukraine) in progressively important sales positions.
After relocating to Canada in 2000 he works with ActionPak advertising agency.
